What Is It?
DC 5259 applies when the meniscus has been surgically removed, either partially or completely. Meniscectomy is a common procedure for veterans who tore their meniscus during service. While removing the damaged cartilage often eliminates the locking and catching symptoms, it leaves the knee with less cushioning and makes it more susceptible to arthritis over time. Many veterans who had meniscus surgery during or shortly after service develop progressive knee problems years later.

What if my meniscectomy was only partial?
Partial meniscectomy qualifies under DC 5259 as long as the knee remains symptomatic. The rating is the same whether the entire meniscus or only a portion was removed.
