What Is It?
Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe when it angles inward toward the second toe. The misalignment creates a protruding joint that becomes swollen, red, and painful, especially when wearing shoes. Years of wearing tight military boots, combined with the physical demands of running and marching, frequently cause or worsen bunions in service members. The condition progressively worsens and can eventually affect the alignment of the entire foot.

How to File
File under DC 5280 for each affected foot. This code requires either surgical resection of the metatarsal head or deformity severe enough to equate to great toe loss. If your bunion does not meet these criteria, it may still be ratable if it limits range of motion of the big toe under DC 5281.

Do I need to have had surgery to get a rating?

Yes. Unlike some bilateral foot codes, DC 5280 is rated per foot. If both feet have qualifying hallux valgus, you can receive 10 percent for each.
