Ankle replacement surgery involves replacing the worn surfaces of the ankle joint with artificial components. Ankle replacement is less common than hip or knee replacement and has a higher complication rate, but for the right candidate it can restore significant function. Veterans may need ankle replacement due to fractures sustained during training or operations, chronic ankle instability that led to arthritis, or long-term wear from years of running and marching. DC 5056 prints a single rating column. Intermediate degrees of residual weakness, pain or limitation of motion are rated by analogy to DC 5270 or DC 5271, and the minimum rating after the 100 percent period is 20 percent.
